For some of us that run websites, whether it be for fun or for a business venture, the stroke of the new year meant that the hosting plan your website operates on will need to be updated very soon if not within the next couple of days. Some website hosting plans literally run from calendar year to calendar year instead of from sign up date to sign up date. This allows the hosting company to better track their clients and when plans need to be renewed each year or every couple of years. So, if you sign up for a hosting plan on, let us say in August, your plan will expire at the end of December that same calendar year. You will then have to renew in January to keep the service.
This might be a pain in the butt to deal with but you will only have to deal with it once, after the initial sign up with the hosting company. In fact, it might be easier to remember when your hosting plan expires if it comes each year or every two years on the first of the new year. Most hosting companies will send their clients reminder emails about when their plan is due to expire and how long they will have following the expiration of the plan to renew the plan without losing their domain name. These email reminders can be incredibly helpful to those who run a company or lead a very busy life and need the extra reminder.
